Earlier this week, we were very appreciative of the invitation and oportunity to provide evidence on the experiences around birth trauma for parents with disabilities to the NDSW Parliament Select Committee on Birth Trauma

Whilst so many women experience birth trauma that they carry in their lives, so often, parents with disabilities are invisible within our maternity systems, and the trauma experienced in multiple ways goes un-noticed and unaddressed.

Changing the conversation is not easy, but @dmcsupport are making headway with their new Maternity Support Worker. Meet their first MSW Allyson:
"My name is Allyson and I’m a Maternity Support Worker (MSW)with DMC Support. As a DeafBlind mum myself, I understand the challenges faced by new mothers who identify as having a disability. DMC Support offers a unique service to women with a disability who are pregnant; working alongside them throughout their pregnancy and into early parenthood.
It`s no secret that parenthood is hard work, but for those with a disability, there are many additional challenges, both mentally and physically. As a MSW, I offer women and their families support that is specialised and individual to each parent. My role as a MSW differs from that of a regular disability support worker as I assist women with a range of needs throughout their pregnancy including advocacy, support for pregnancy education and preparation for parenthood. Throughout this important journey, I work with women and their support team through both practical face-to-face and virtual support."
